Most Chinese herbal medicines do not have much effect on blood glucose, but long-term consumption of Chinese herbal medicines with high sugar content may raise blood glucose, and those with hypoglycemic effect may lower blood glucose. Long-term consumption of Chinese herbal medicines with high sugar content, such as the honey-concocted Chinese herb Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae Praeparata, may cause elevation of blood glucose. If the Chinese herbal medicine contains hypoglycemic ingredients, for example, the flavonoids in Huanglian can promote the regeneration of pancreatic islet cells, which can lower blood sugar, and the Puerarin in Pueraria Mirifica, which can also lower blood sugar. Long-term use of Chinese medicines containing hypoglycemic effects may lead to hypoglycemia. Most Chinese medicines have little effect on blood sugar. They should be used reasonably under the guidance of a doctor.
