What is epileptic encephalopathy

Epileptic encephalopathy is a progressive brain dysfunction caused by epileptic abnormalities. Epileptic encephalopathy does not refer to a single disorder; it is a progressive impairment of brain function due to frequent seizures and epileptiform discharges. Simply put, patients with epileptic encephalopathy have not only epileptic manifestations, but also manifestations other than epilepsy, such as the development of intellectual disability, cognitive decline as well as impairment of motor function and expressive language skills, and vary in severity. The majority of these cases occur in newborns, infants, and early childhood. These children often have poor brain development, poor drug treatment and poor prognosis. It is recommended to consult the neurological specialties of children’s hospitals when the above manifestations occur.
