What are the Chinese medicine taboos?

Avoidance refers to the taboos in the patient’s diet when he or she is ill. For example, patients with chronic nephritis are prohibited from eating a high-salt diet and diabetic patients are prohibited from eating a high-sugar diet, as this may lead to life-threatening conditions; “taboo” means “should be avoided”. The so-called “taboo” means “should be avoided”, such as patients suffering from carbuncles and sores should not eat goose meat and seafood, otherwise it can trigger or aggravate the disease, so we must avoid eating food with “fever”. It has been a widely popular traditional custom among folk for a long time, and from ancient times to the present, medical doctors have been asking patients to avoid eating and taking medicine. The “Golden Killing” points out: “Where the taste of food and drink to nourish in life, eat with harm, but can be harmful”. Avoidance of food is one of the important elements in the treatment of Chinese medicine. But the taboo must be reasonable, in order to benefit the recovery of the disease. The content of the Chinese medicine taboo is relatively broad, strictly speaking, including these layers of meaning. The first refers to dietary taboos. Food, like medicine, has its own characteristics: cold, hot, warm, cool four qi, sour, sweet, pungent, bitter, salty five taste. Compared with drugs, this characteristic of food is milder, but it is still unfavorable to some diseases, such as patients with febrile diseases, or those who have heat in their bodies, avoid eating warm foods such as brown sugar, syrup, chili, pepper, ginger, onion, garlic, leek, dog meat, mutton, venison, etc.; those with cold spleen and stomach, avoid eating foods that are too cold, such as cucumber, radish, horseshoe, pear, persimmon, clam, crab, mussel, snail, etc. When you have a cough and cough phlegm, the herbalist will tell you not to eat “fishy” things, which is justified. From the perspective of modern medicine, at this time, the trachea-bronchial mucosa is congested and edematous, the lumen is relatively narrow, and the secretion of phlegm increases, so “fishy” things tend to increase the phlegm in the trachea, so it will aggravate the cough and cough. Another example is pediatric bronchial asthma, we must avoid eating fish, shrimp, milk, eggs and other allergy-prone foods. Otherwise, these allergens enter the human body through complex reactions and produce certain substances that act on the bronchial tubes, which can trigger or aggravate asthma. When treating sores, swellings, rashes, ulcers and other diseases, the avoidance of “hairy substances” is especially important. “It is customary to consider such meat as chicken head, pig head, seafood, fish, beef, mutton, goose, as well as onion, pepper, ginger, leek and so on in condiments, as well as wine, liquor, bamboo shoots, mustard, alfalfa and so on as “hairy things”. Pay attention to dietary taboos will promote the development of the disease to the good side, otherwise it will aggravate the disease, or even lead to deterioration. The second refers to food avoidance. As there are contraindications between foods and between foods and drugs, certain foods should not be mixed together to eat, and certain foods should not be mixed with certain drugs to take together. In the Southern Tang Dynasty, Chen Shiliang’s “Food Properties” says: “Spinach should not be eaten with eel, it will cause cholera. The eel is sweet and warm, which is good for the middle of the body and helps to remove the coldness in the abdomen, while spinach is sweet and cold and slippery, which is good for the lower air and moistens dryness. The two of them are the same as each other, and the eel is fatty and the spinach is cold and slippery, which can easily cause diarrhea, so it is said that the food is “cholera”. The use of milk should not be sweetened with sour plum crystal, hawthorn crystal, orange crystal, brown sugar and so on. These foods are acidic, such as sour plum crystal has citric acid, milk, milk powder in the case of protein acid coagulation phenomenon, losing its nutritional value. Another example is that tofu should not be eaten with spinach because spinach contains more oxalic acid, which is easily combined with calcium in tofu to produce insoluble calcium salts, which cannot be absorbed by the body. In addition, some components of food and drugs, when taken together, there are also mutual grams, fear, kill each other relationship. For example, the spicy taste of radish mainly comes from the mustard oil contained in the ingredients, the volatile effect of mustard oil can weaken the tonic effect of ginseng, so avoid eating radish when taking ginseng. In general, when taking medicines to warm the stomach, avoid eating cold and beans, especially mung beans; when taking prescriptions to cool the blood and stop bleeding, avoid mutton, dog meat and spicy condiments. The third refers to the contraindication of taking medicine for treatment. For example, during the treatment of patients suffering from hypertension, on the one hand, it is forbidden to eat pickles, wine paste and other products that help to produce phlegm; on the other hand, it is also forbidden to take pungent, warm, dry, fire, dense sweat medicine, otherwise it can aggravate the condition, and even the occurrence of stroke and other acute evidence. Another example is that during the period of chicken pox in children, on the one hand, greasy and spicy food should be prohibited; on the other hand, warm and dry drugs with strong propagation should be avoided, otherwise it can lead to poor transmission of the pox rash or loss of vital energy due to heat and fire, delaying the disease and aggravating the condition of the child. Patients suffering from chronic diarrhea, on the one hand, need to pay attention to diet, prohibit the consumption of spicy, greasy things; on the other hand, also avoid taking or cautiously use drugs with nourishing, cold and other Yin properties, otherwise it can lead to internal injury of the stomach and intestines, spleen qi depletion, dampness and turbidity, deficiency and mixed, so that the evidence of the disease is complicated, or delayed. There are many different kinds of human diseases, and the taboo should not only have a clear purpose, but also be applied flexibly under the premise of following the basic principles, to avoid blind taboos. Do not dare to eat this do not dare to eat that, often even the human body is not satisfied with the essential nutrients, there is no benefit to health, as the “regulation of disease diet discernment” said: “do not follow the taboo, the mistake in indulgence; prudent people, do not know the physics, the general do not dare to eat, the mistake in the detention; misinjection of harm is not shallow, and when the food is not eaten, sitting loss is also more.
