Duodenal ulcer can be categorized as “stomach pain” in Chinese medicine. Scutellaria baicalensis and Rhizoma coptidis have the effects of clearing heat and drying dampness, diarrhea and detoxification, and can be used in the treatment of duodenal ulcers caused by dampness-heat obstruction (stagnation of dampness and heat evils). 1. Scutellaria baicalensis: This drug is the dried root of Scutellaria baicalensis of the family Labiatae, with the effects of clearing heat and drying dampness, diarrhea and detoxification, stopping bleeding, and tranquilizing the fetus, and it can be used in the treatment of dampness-warmth (warmth caused by dampness-heat sensation), summer-dampness, chest tightness and vomiting, dampness-heat plumping (distension and discomfort of the stomach), diarrhea and dysentery, jaundice, coughing of lung-heat and feverish and annoying thirst. It should be avoided by people with deficiency heat in the spleen and lungs. 2. Huanglian: This drug is the dried rhizome of buttercup plant Huanglian, triangular-leafed Huanglian or Yunlian, which has the efficacy of clearing heat and drying dampness, diarrhea and detoxification, can be used in the treatment of damp-heat plagma, vomiting and acid swallowing (swallowing the acid in the stomach upward to the mouth and pharynx), diarrhea, jaundice, high fever and dizziness, excessive fire in the heart, disturbed and insomnia (disturbed and hot in the heart, insomnia), palpitations, etc. The treatment should be avoided by those with deficiency heat in spleen and lungs. When using Huanglian, it should be noted that it is not suitable for people with stomach deficiency and vomiting.
