Causes and treatment of frostbite in babies

Frostbite is a limited inflammatory erythema damage caused by the combination of low temperatures above freezing point and high humidity (wet and cold environment), which heals on its own when the climate warms up. In layman’s terms, frostbite occurs when the blood flow in the body is poor in a cold and humid environment.
Why do babies get frostbite easily?
When the body is in a cold and humid environment for a longer period of time, the blood vessels on the human body surface become spasmodic, blood flow decreases, tissue ischemia and hypoxia occur, and cells are damaged, especially the fingers and toes with poor blood circulation are prone to frostbite.
  1, climate factors
Cold weather, including air humidity, flow rate and sudden weather changes, humidity and wind speed can affect the body’s heat dissipation.
  2.The whole body factors
Baby’s body surface area to kilogram weight ratio is relatively large compared to adults, which determines the baby’s skin heat dissipation fast, more heat consumption characteristics. The baby’s skin is also more sensitive to temperature changes in the external environment than adults. When the temperature falls below 10°C, the small subcutaneous arteries contract and the venous blood flow is poor, resulting in frostbite in babies.
  3.Dressing factors
For example, tight shoes and socks, prolonged standing or prolonged immersion in cold water can cause blood circulation to become impaired, leading to frostbite.
  4.Physiological factors
The water content of baby’s skin tissue is higher than that of adults, which is also the reason why babies are prone to frostbite.
Why do some babies get frostbite every year?
Some babies get frostbite every year, mostly because their skin surface temperature is lower than that of other babies and their peripheral circulation is poorer than that of the general population, and malnutrition in some babies can also aggravate peripheral circulation disorders.
What parts of the body do frostbite grow on?
Frostbite usually occurs at the end of the body, especially on exposed areas such as the face, ears, fingers, arms and calves, heels and toes.
Clinical manifestations are dark purplish-red patches or nodules, partly edematous, with bright red edges, tense and shiny surface, fading when pressed, low temperature of the lesions, severe blisters or blood blisters, rupture to form vesicles or ulcers, feeling itchy, burning or painful, and itching aggravated by heating.
  Treatment must be done
Unruptured: you can use some drugs that promote blood circulation, such as chili tincture, vitamin E ointment, 10% camphor ointment, and if necessary, internal vasodilators such as niacin. (Baby oral dose remember to take under the guidance of the doctor!)
Those who have breakouts: you can use some 5% boric acid ointment, erythromycin ointment.
Note: Moms and dads should not blindly use rubbing or hot water bubbles to treat frostbite on their own, because the force or temperature control is not good, it is easy to make the baby’s skin tissues suffer a second blow, or even infection, if the above creams do not improve, please go to the hospital in time!
  1. Pay attention to keeping warm
If your baby has frostbite in the previous year, be especially careful the next year! Remember to bring masks, windproof earmuffs, gloves, etc. when you go out. Shoes and socks should not be too tight, and keep them dry.
  2.Appropriate exercise
Increase your baby’s outdoor exercise appropriately to promote blood circulation, give your baby some skin rubbing massage regularly every day, and when your baby’s hands and feet are cold, you should not return home with hot water to burn your hands, and you should try to let the limbs re-warm naturally.
  3. Routine care
Frostbite prone areas should be rubbed with some skin care products to protect the skin.
  4.Rational diet
Give your baby some high-calorie and vitamin-rich food to enhance the ability of the exposed parts to adapt to the cold and prevent the occurrence of babies.
