Herpes simplex scabs that are accidentally picked off can be treated with fusidic acid cream and mupirocin ointment as appropriate and as prescribed by your doctor. Herpes simplex scabs that are accidentally picked off should be partially disinfected with povidone-iodine to prevent the wound from becoming infected. Fusidic acid cream, mupirocin ointment, etc. can be used as appropriate to prevent secondary bacterial infection; and continue to take antiviral medications, including acyclovir, valacyclovir or famciclovir. Take care not to pick at the blisters on your own, and try to wear soft, loose-fitting cotton clothing to minimize friction and the risk of causing the blisters to rupture. Avoid direct contact with others when the lesions are oozing, and disinfect clothes, bedding, towels, etc. that have been in contact with herpes fluid. Herpes simplex should be treated in accordance with the doctor’s instructions, do not blindly self-medication.
