Can chronic sinusitis become cancerous

The real etiology of malignant tumors of the nasal cavity and sinuses has not yet been clarified, and it may be related to the large-scale squamous metaplasia of the mucosal epithelium caused by long-term chronic inflammatory stimulation. Therefore, theoretically speaking, chronic sinusitis has the possibility of cancer, but the cancer rate is very low. It is recommended that patients with chronic sinusitis should be actively treated. Chronic sinusitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs in the mucosa of the sinuses, mostly evolved from acute sinusitis, but also related to trauma, nasal obstruction disease, clinical manifestations of nasal congestion, olfactory dysfunction, headache, etc., and can be accompanied by fatigue and other discomforts. If chronic sinusitis is not treated in time, it may cause intraorbital infection or intracranial infection, and in serious cases, it may also jeopardize the patients’ life, but it is usually not cancerous. While the cause of sinus cancer is not clear, it may be related to chronic inflammatory stimulation of sinus, sinus polyps or papilloma carcinoma, smoking and so on can lead to this disease. Symptoms often include unilateral progressive nasal congestion, bloody snot, foul-smelling pus or flesh-colored watery snot, and there may be symptoms such as head swelling, headache, loss of smell or loss of sense of smell, and nasal and facial swelling. Therefore, it is recommended that patients with chronic sinusitis seek timely medical treatment and actively cooperate with doctors to standardize treatment.
