Herpes zoster is an acute herpetic skin disease caused by the same virus (varicella-zoster virus) as chickenpox. It is commonly found in the lower back and spreads like a belt, so it is called “herpes zoster”. In Chinese medicine, there are many other names for this disease, such as “waist-wrapping fire dan”, “snake dan” and “snake sore”. Herpes zoster occurs in spring and autumn, and is often preceded by local skin sensory allergy or neuralgia, accompanied by mild fever, general malaise, loss of appetite and other prodromal symptoms, or it can develop suddenly. The affected area first develops flushed spots, followed by clusters of corn- to green-bean-sized papules, which rapidly turn into blisters, with clear and clear blisters, shiny and tense walls, and a red halo around the blisters. Several clusters of blisters are often arranged along the dermal nerve in a band, which may form vesicles due to herpetic membrane rupture, or even necrosis or secondary purulent infection. The whole course of the disease is about 2 to 3 weeks. Neuralgia is another major feature of the disease. The older and weaker the patient is, the more severe the pain is, and the more unbearable it is in patients with diabetes. Therefore, Sui. The pain of herpes zoster is described as “miserable” and “catastrophic pain” by Chao Yuanfang’s “Treatise on the Origin of Various Diseases”, and about 30-50% of middle-aged and elderly patients can remain with intractable neuralgia, which often lasts for months or even years. The medical term for this is “postherpetic neuralgia”. Western medicine believes it is caused by viral invasion of the spinal nerve roots, resulting in neuritis and gangliositis, which causes nerve fiber adhesions. Herpes zoster can occur in various parts of the body, commonly in the chest, waist and abdomen, but also in the head and face, and can cause severe pain and deafness and facial paralysis by damaging the trigeminal nerve. Herpes zoster occurs due to a decrease in the immunity of the body, which is caused by many factors, such as colds, overwork, mental factors such as anxiety and anger, certain infectious diseases, malignant tumors, leukemia, lymphoma, AIDS, systemic lupus erythematosus, etc. Herpes zoster should be checked for underlying diseases. In patients with malignant tumors, immune deficiency or old and weak, the rash may spread throughout the body within a few days after the localized rash, accompanied by high fever and brain damage, which can be serious and even fatal, called generalized herpes zoster. If the contents of the rash are bloody, it is called hemorrhagic herpes zoster, and if the lesions are necrotic, it is called necrotizing herpes zoster. Especially the elderly, as the age of the body’s various functions are declining, the damaged nerve tissue repair is also more difficult, so it is easy to occur after neuralgia. This pain can last for several months or even longer, especially if the patient is in poor physical condition or if treatment is not timely.
