Best time to exercise for Parkinson’s

Parkinson’s usually refers to Parkinson’s disease, the best time for patients to exercise is the “on” period. Some patients with Parkinson’s disease have obvious “switch phenomenon”, which is the fluctuation of drug effect after taking levodopa drugs for a long time. When the drug starts to work, the patient can move freely and is in the “on” period; when the effect of the drug gradually weakens and disappears, the patient’s activities become very difficult, even like freezing, which is called the “off” period. For patients with the above “on-off phenomenon”, the “on” period should be utilized for exercise and learning new motor skills. During the “off” period, the patient should utilize the acquired motor skills to cope with the limitation of movement while ensuring safety. For patients who do not have the above phenomenon, they can freely choose the exercise time according to their own situation. Parkinson’s disease patients need to pay attention to ensure safety, avoid falling, exercise intensity should not be too large, such as the following situations to stop training and timely medical care: nausea, chest tightness, chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness or vertigo. Specific exercise programs need to be developed by a professional doctor.
