What is the swelling or burning sensation behind the sternum?

Retrosternal distension or burning sensation may be related to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), esophageal cancer, mid-esophageal diverticulum and other diseases.
1. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): it can be related to factors such as increased intra-abdominal pressure, hiatal hernia, long-term alcohol consumption and so on. It may manifest as retrosternal distension or burning sensation, as well as symptoms such as acid reflux, chest pain, chronic cough and dysphagia.
2. Esophageal cancer: the exact cause of esophageal cancer is still unclear, and it may be related to factors such as smoking, drinking and heredity. In the early stage, it may be manifested as distension and tightness behind the sternum or burning heat sensation, and progressive dysphagia, food reflux, hoarseness, choking and coughing will gradually appear.
3. Middle esophageal diverticulum: It can be related to the inflammation of lymph nodes near the bifurcation of trachea or pulmonary hilar. It may be manifested as a feeling of distension or burning sensation behind the sternum, which is obvious when swallowing, as well as symptoms such as back pain and choking.
Retrosternal distension or burning sensation may also be other causes, such as esophageal hiatal hernia, stable angina, etc., need to go to the hospital in a timely manner, clear the cause of the disease and then follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment, to avoid self-medication, which will have adverse effects.
