Methods of sinus examination

Sinuses are air-containing cavities in the craniofacial bone surrounding the nasal cavity, paired left and right, and can be divided into four groups: maxillary, septal, frontal, and pterygoid sinuses. Since the sinuses are not located in the nasal cavity, but only the sinus opening drains into the nasal cavity, the examination can be divided into anterior rhinoscopy, nasal endoscopy, general palpation and pressure on the nasal face, and imaging. If the sinus inflammation or infection is more severe or if there is a tumor in the sinus, it may cause swelling of the skin and painful pressure on the corresponding part of the face. Anterior rhinoscopy and nasal endoscopy can see the condition of the nasal cavity, whether there is any purulent discharge, whether the sinus opening is clear, and whether there are polyps, papillomas, tumors, etc. blocking the sinus opening. There is also the imaging examination, generally used is sinus CT, through CT can see the specific situation of each sinus in the cranial cavity. Therefore, the examination of sinuses should be done by a combination of means and auxiliary examinations, so that the specific situation of sinuses can be clarified and used for clinical examination and treatment.
