Why are doctors’ scrubs always green?

In fact, not only the doctor’s scrubs, but also the sheets in the operating room, the walls of the operating room and so on are all green. However, with the development of the times, some hospitals have also adopted blue or navy blue as the main color, but mainly in dark colors. For the green, there are many interpretations: for example, green can reduce the visual fatigue of doctors, soothe the psychological pressure of patients, and that the green yearning for vitality, yearning for life. It is also said that when red blood is spilled on the green towel, it will not appear obvious bright red, but will turn into dark red, so as to avoid unnecessary panic of the patient. In fact, when I started my medical studies in the eighties, the hospital gowns, the operating table sheets, were all white. Once you lay on them again, it does feel a bit less auspicious. Especially when blood touches the white sheets, it will irritate the patient, at the same time, white is not easy to clean, obviously after high temperature sterilization of the sheets, but it gives people a dirty feeling. Later with the development of the times, hospitals began to try more colors. For example, green and blue are now very mainstream colors. When I go abroad for surgery, I can also see that many nurses abroad have flowery hand-washing clothes, which are also quite pretty. But on the operating table, everyone’s dress code is still standardized and uniform. As to why dark colors are chosen, one can imagine that if the doctors all have red scrubs, the red operating room, together with the surgeon’s surgical instruments, seems to have a sense of the atmosphere of a haunted house. The patient’s blood pressure spikes upon entry, along with fear of the doctor, which would certainly have a detrimental effect on the surgery.
