In the First National Symposium on Psychosocial Care for Cancer Patients held in June 2003, Shanghai Cancer Rehabilitation Club revealed this set of survey data: 40% of the per capita medical expenses of cancer patients are spent in the last year of life, and 40% of them are spent in the last month of life. 80% of cancer patients die not in the treatment period but in the recovery period. of cancer patients die not in the treatment period but in the recovery period. Experts at the conference believe that if they can understand some knowledge of tumor prevention and treatment, early prevention, early detection, early diagnosis and early treatment, and also pay attention to the recovery period after treatment, their lives can be saved, and moreover, they can avoid malignant tumors and get a chance to be cured. I. High-risk groups neglect early examination There are high-risk groups for cancer, for example, the probability of lung cancer among smokers is tens of times higher than that of non-smokers, people suffering from liver cirrhosis disease are prone to liver cancer, chronic gastric disease left untreated for a long time will lead to gastric cancer, and the proportion of breast cancer is high among women who work in night shift for a long time ……. However, most people do not take this simple truth seriously and refuse to spend part of their medical expenses in the budding stage of the disease, and have to wait until the disease is diagnosed before they spend a lot of money to save their lives. The famous oncologist Wu Mengchao talked about this with deep feelings, often seeing that some patients are already in advanced stage when they are diagnosed in hospital, and the treatment means of modern medicine for them are very limited. Many of them can only use money as a kind of consolation in the end. Most cancer patients are still undergoing high doses of radiotherapy and chemotherapy at the last moment of their lives, their hair is falling out in large quantities, they have no appetite for food at all, and their quality of life is extremely poor. Professor Wu Yi, Vice President of Cancer Hospital of Fudan University, has made a calculation with breast tumor as an example: if detected and treated early, the total cost of surgery is 3,000-4,000 RMB as long as local excision is done and radiotherapy and chemotherapy are not needed, but if the surgery itself is advanced, the area of excision should be large and radiotherapy and chemotherapy should be done afterwards, and antimicrobial agents should be taken, the cost is as high as 20,000-30,000 RMB. The difference is nearly 10 times. In a questionnaire, when asked what they would like to do after discharge, many cancer patients blankly filled in the word “nothing”, and in fact they really did not think of special treatment in the recovery stage. Yuan Zhengping, president of Shanghai Cancer Rehabilitation Club, said that conventional treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and laser are necessary but not the end, because the aggressive “first treatment” can only remove the cancer tumor or suppress the cancer pain at best, but cannot completely change the internal environment that makes cancer occur and develop. If the “second treatment” of overall rehabilitation can adjust and restore the traumatized physiological function, especially the immune function, and change the small environment in the body that is conducive to the growth of tumor, it can effectively prevent the recurrence, metastasis and regeneration of cancer. The group anti-cancer model founded by Cancer Rehabilitation Club is to focus on psychological treatment during the recovery period, so that patients can treat the recovery period scientifically and prolong their lives. It has been proved that the 5-year survival of cancer patients in the Cancer Rehabilitation Club has reached more than 50%, which is nearly double the city’s statistical average of 28.5%. We also learned that there are 62 cancer hospitals in the country, but only 1 hospital has set up a rehabilitation department, and tumor rehabilitation has not entered the discipline construction at all, which invariably makes cancer patients favor physiological treatment and neglect psychological rehabilitation.
