The more common causes of cough are bronchiectasis, chronic bronchitis, allergic cough or cough variant asthma. A chest CT, bronchodilator test and allergen testing are required. In the case of cough variant asthma, there will be a positive bronchodilator test and long-term treatment with inhaled bronchodilators and glucocorticoids, such as budesonide and terbutaline, will be required. In the case of allergic cough, it is usually necessary to identify the allergen and avoid allergen exposure. Next, anti-allergy medications such as paracetamol, loratadine or cetirizine hydrochloride need to be taken. In addition, if the cough is caused by bronchitis or bronchiectasis, anti-infective treatment is often needed in the acute phase, preferably with sputum culture and drug sensitivity testing. Depending on the type of infection, a sensitive antibiotic can be selected for anti-inflammatory purposes. It is also necessary to take cough and phlegm relieving medications, such as aminoglutethimide oral solution, pulmonary cough combination or tranylcypromine hydrochloride.
