This “universal weight loss” era, in the surgical ward, there will be people malnutrition? When you look at the title, you will be confused. Is it true? The answer is yes, surgical patients may suffer from malnutrition. Foreign data show that the incidence of malnutrition in general surgery inpatients is around 27% (BMJ, 1994). From the domestic data, the results of screening for malnutrition risk in a total of 5303 inpatients from 6 clinical specialties in 11 large urban hospitals nationwide in 2006 showed that the incidence of malnutrition in general surgery inpatients was 12.4% and the incidence of nutritional risk was 29%; in thoracic surgery it was 15.1% and 42.0%, respectively. Malnutrition is particularly prominent in gastrointestinal tract tumors, such as gastric cancer and pancreatic cancer; special groups, such as the elderly and children, and needs to be taken seriously.
