Patients with diffuse thyroid changes but normal thyroid function are commonly seen with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, also known as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. In the early stages of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the thyroid gland is damaged while the follicles of the gland proliferate and blood flow increases, keeping thyroid function within normal limits. However, as the disease progresses, the follicles degenerate and decrease, and the thyroid gland function becomes subclinical hypothyroidism or hypothyroidism.
