How to identify and treat heartburn in Chinese medicine

The common types of heartburn include gastrointestinal depression and heat, gastric yin deficiency (insufficient yin fluid in the stomach), liver-stomach disharmony (disharmony between the ascending liver and descending stomach), damp-heat obstruction (accumulation of dampness and heat to form a blockage), and gastrointestinal stagnation, etc. Clearing the middle broth, Benefiting the stomach broth, Zuojinwan, Sanren broth, and Dangshen drink can be used respectively.
There is no unified treatment guideline for heartburn, the above are common clinical patterns, the treatment formula is not the only one, the doctor according to the patient’s symptoms and tongue and pulse to identify the prescription plus or minus.
1. In addition to heartburn, symptoms such as burning pain in the stomach and epigastrium, swollen and painful gums, dry stools, and short and red urine (small amount of urine, dark yellow in color) can be seen in gastrointestinal and internal organs, so Qingzhong Tang can be used to clear away the heat.
2. Deficiency of stomach yin can be accompanied by vague pain in gastritis, hunger, hunger without food, and disturbed sleeplessness, etc. It can be treated with Yi-Stomach Tang.
3. Liver and stomach disharmony may be accompanied by distension and fullness of the ribs and wounds, back pain, tightness and discomfort, and aggravation of symptoms of unsteadiness, etc. Zuo Jin Wan can be used.
4. Damp-heat obstruction can be accompanied by stomach and epigastric constriction, sticky and greasy taste in the mouth, head and body drowsiness (heaviness in the head and limbs), and irregular bowel movement, etc. Sanren Tang can be used.
5. Stagnation of the stomach channels may be accompanied by vague pain or stabbing pain in the stomach and epigastrium, aggravated at night and after eating, and may be treated with the addition or subtraction of Danshen Drink.
