A degenerative herniated disc means that the disc is herniated after degeneration. If the disc itself changes in nature, degeneration will occur, which will appear as a localized hypodense lesion, like a blister-like hypodense lesion, on CT imaging. After such degeneration of the intervertebral disc, the nucleus pulposus will protrude into the spinal canal and a disc herniation will occur. If the degenerative disc herniation does not compress the nerves, pain and numbness in the lower extremities will not occur, and back pain may occur. If the herniated disc degeneration compresses the peripheral nerves, pain and numbness in the lower extremities will also occur along with the low back pain.
