Rib fracture can be discharged from the hospital in 1~2 weeks after surgery, and special cases should be decided according to the individual’s physique and specific condition.
1. Simple rib fracture, if the degree of fracture is mild and there is no complication, usually use chest strap or adhesive tape to fix it, in most cases, it can be discharged in 3~7 days; pay attention to regular review.
2. Multiple rib fracture with respiratory difficulties, requiring incision and internal fixation surgery, after surgery to restore the stability of the fracture end, usually 1 to 2 weeks can be discharged from the hospital, go home to continue treatment, pay attention to rest and follow up checkups.
3. For severe multiple rib fractures, complicated by hemothorax, hemopneumothorax and other serious complications or requiring chest expansion by traction, the time for healing of complications and restoration of thoracic stability will be greatly extended, and it may take 2 to 4 weeks or more. Individuals who are physically weaker will recover even more slowly, in some cases taking 2 to 3 months to slowly recover.
Rib fractures require prompt medical attention and active cooperation with your physician to prevent complications such as intra-pulmonary infections. Adequate functional exercise is required to prevent conditions such as pulmonary atelectasis.
