The cause of bitter mouth odor may be physiological factors such as eating certain foods, or oral, nasopharyngeal, digestive, respiratory, neuropsychiatric and other pathological factors.
1. Physiological factors: consuming onions, garlic or drinking alcoholic beverages, after metabolism, produce some kind of foul-smelling substances through the lungs exhaled from the mouth, or taking drugs such as amyl nitrite can also cause bad breath. Sometimes there will be a short period of bad breath in the morning.
2. Pathologic factors: including oral, nasopharyngeal, digestive, respiratory, neuropsychiatric and other diseases.
(1) Oral diseases: dental tartar, dense spirochetes and other pathogenic bacteria lead to tongue and periodontal lesions can produce bad breath. Necrotic material in periodontal pockets, food debris on the tongue, shedding epithelial cells, intertooth spaces and decayed food in cavities can also cause bad breath.
(2) Nasopharyngeal diseases: chronic pharyngitis, atrophic rhinitis, follicular tonsillitis, etc. can also cause bad odor.
(3) Digestive, respiratory and other diseases: dyspepsia, cirrhosis of the liver, Helicobacter pylori infection, lung abscess, etc. can produce bad breath. Diabetes mellitus, severe renal failure, certain metal or organic poisoning, etc., the mouth can produce abnormal odor.
(4) Neuropsychiatric abnormalities: psychological disorders such as halitosis phobia or certain neurological disorders leading to olfactory or gustatory disorders, the patient does not have halitosis, but is self-conscious about having bad breath.
