Abnormal glucose metabolism is a very big concept that includes diabetes, so abnormal glucose metabolism is not necessarily diabetes, but diabetes is definitely abnormal glucose metabolism. Abnormal glucose metabolism mainly includes impaired fasting glucose, abnormal glucose tolerance and diabetes mellitus, let’s talk about these three concepts separately. Impaired fasting glucose is defined as fasting blood glucose greater than 6.1mmol/L and less than 7mmol/L. Abnormal glucose tolerance is defined as blood glucose greater than 7.8mmol/L and less than 11.1mmol/L two hours after meal, both of which do not reach the diagnosis of diabetes but are no longer within the normal range of blood glucose. Diabetes is defined as fasting blood glucose greater than 7mmol/L, and/or two hours after meal blood glucose greater than 11.1mmol/L, both of which can reach the diagnosis of diabetes. So to summarize abnormal glucose metabolism is not necessarily diabetes mellitus.
