Why platelets don’t rise after chemotherapy

The reason why platelets do not rise after chemotherapy may be bone marrow suppression. Chemotherapy drugs not only affect tumor cells, but also damage normal bone marrow hematopoiesis. Because the life span of blood cells in the bone marrow is very short, so in order to quickly replenish the body’s needs, blood cell precursor stem cells must divide rapidly. The target of chemotherapeutic drugs is the rapidly dividing cells, so chemotherapy often leads to bone marrow suppression and low platelets. Common treatments include suspending or stopping chemotherapy, waiting for platelets to return to normal levels before proceeding with subsequent treatments, or considering drug treatments such as thrombopoietin if chemotherapy cannot be stopped due to the condition.
