The exact probability of fetal malformations resulting from the use of ribavirin in pregnant women is not available. Animal studies have found severe teratogenic and/or fetal lethal effects in all animal species using ribavirin, while morphological changes in testicular spermatozoa caused by ribavirin have been reported. It is therefore contraindicated in pregnant women, women planning pregnancy and their male partners. Following administration, ribavirin may remain in plasma for up to 6 months. Pregnancy should be avoided in female patients during treatment with ribavirin and for 9 months after discontinuation of the drug, and in female partners of male patients treated with ribavirin for 6 months. Use at least two effective forms of contraception during the period of medication and perform pregnancy tests once a month. The use of specific medications needs to be under the guidance of a medical professional, and should not be used at your own discretion to avoid danger.
