Do pregnant women older than 35 have to have an amniocentesis?

Amniocentesis is clinically required for pregnant women older than 35 years of age in order to understand the development of the fetus. A 35-year-old pregnant woman is of advanced maternal age, and if she undergoes ordinary Down’s syndrome screening, the result is not very accurate. The risk of trisomy 21 and trisomy 18 for women in this age group is relatively high, and only Down’s syndrome screening is not able to provide a clear result, and amniocentesis is required to better understand whether there are any chromosomal malformations in the fetus. Amniocentesis is a relatively advanced test that can be performed by extracting the fetus’ amniotic fluid and analyzing its composition to determine whether the fetus has a chromosomal disorder. Pregnant women over the age of 35 should undergo regular checkups during pregnancy, especially for screening to avoid fetal malformations.
