Microphthalmos is a congenital developmental abnormality that is commonly inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion. The main manifestation of microphthalmos in the eye is a quadruple syndrome, as follows: First, inverted medial canthus: that is, medial canthus is predominantly the medial canthus of the lower eyelid. Second, ptosis: that is, the upper eyelid covers more of the black eye. Third, the lid fissure is smaller: that is, the eyes look smaller. Fourth, saddle nose: that is, the nose is as flat as a saddle and the two inner canthus of the eyes are more widely spaced. Surgery is generally recommended for small lid fissure syndrome, but early surgery is not recommended because some children with small lid fissures may not be fully developed, and some congenital heart diseases, etc., should be ruled out. When the child is 3-5 years old, it is a better time to have surgery. If the surgery is not done for a long time, there are times when amblyopia can be a concern.
