Is medical abortion harmful to the body?

Medication abortion is a common method of terminating early pregnancies through medication and generally has little effect on the patient’s body. The medications chosen for abortion are mifepristone and misoprostol. The combination of these two drugs can be used to terminate an early pregnancy. Studies have shown that these two drugs have little effect on the patient’s body itself. Mifepristone is a drug that has the ability to kill the embryo and facilitate its expulsion. Some women can complete the abortion process after taking mifepristone orally. Misoprostol is a drug that softens the cervix and promotes contraction of the uterus. The addition of misoprostol after oral mifepristone promotes the expulsion of the dead embryo through the softened cervix. Medical abortion is also a relatively safe method of abortion in current clinical practice. However, it should be noted that the residual rate of medical abortion is high and some women do not have complete expulsion of the embryo after medical abortion, resulting in residual embryonic tissue. This results in drenching bleeding and abdominal pain. These patients must undergo a curettage to remove the remaining embryonic tissue in the uterine cavity. In this case, the damage to the patient is much greater than in the case of medical abortion alone.
