Idiopathic thrombocytopenia, also known as immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), is a relatively common thrombocytopenic disorder. The cause is unknown and is currently considered to be due to humoral and cellular immune factors. Patients often present with petechiae on the skin and mucous membranes, as well as nosebleeds, bleeding gums and excessive menstruation. Diagnosis is often made by routine blood, bone marrow and serological tests.
