Gastroesophageal reflux is the cause of recurrent asthma

Cough and asthma, which are also symptoms of GERD, should be taken seriously. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which stomach contents often reflux into the esophagus, causing chronic symptoms or tissue damage. The prevalence is higher in western countries, up to 10-20%. In China, the incidence of GERD is on the rise and tends to be younger. According to epidemiological surveys in Beijing and Shanghai, the incidence rate is 5.77%. The main symptoms of GERD patients are heartburn, acid reflux, regurgitation, regurgitation and belching, which are mostly obvious or aggravated after meals, and easily appear when lying down or with the trunk flexed forward. A small number of patients may present with dysphagia and painful swallowing. Some patients may show some symptoms outside the esophagus: chest pain, hiccups, cough, asthma, hoarseness, nausea, sleep disorders, etc. It is worth mentioning that patients with GERD can develop complications such as upper gastrointestinal bleeding, esophageal stricture, Barrett’s esophagus, which is associated with the development of esophageal adenocarcinoma. Patients with GERD develop chronic cough and asthma, mainly due to reflux of gastric contents mistakenly inhaled into the respiratory tract, causing spasm in the respiratory tract and resulting in coughing, which is very easy to be treated as pharyngitis and bronchitis. For patients with GERD symptoms, doctors usually recommend gastroscopy, 24-hour esophageal PH monitoring, and other tests to clarify the diagnosis. The onset of GERD increases with age. Some factors are associated with the development of this disease, such as obesity, food, satiety, smoking, and certain medications, and patients should avoid these factors. It is recommended to eat eight minutes full, take a walk after meals, not eat 2 hours before bedtime, elevate the head of the bed 15 cm-20 cm if there is nocturnal reflux, maintain a normal weight, and perform regular treatment to relieve symptoms, heal esophagitis, and avoid complications.
