From the persistent insomnia patients referred to our hospital, most of them have been receiving multiple medications for a long time, including sleeping pills, antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, Chinese herbal medicine, proprietary Chinese medicine, and then some antipsychotics. These drugs not only do not cure the patient’s insomnia, but also lead to a more complex and difficult to treat condition. In fact, whether it is Chinese medicine or Western medicine, medication alone is usually not good enough to cure intractable insomnia. When suffering from persistent insomnia, it is best to first go to the hospital for a comprehensive psychological assessment and determine the treatment plan based on the results of the psychological assessment. If it is secondary insomnia, appropriate medication and psychotherapy should be given for insomnia symptoms while actively treating the primary disease. In the case of primary intractable insomnia, psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, should be the primary treatment. Early treatment can be combined with small doses of medication, but neither doctors nor patients should rely on medication to treat intractable insomnia. However, the current status of treatment of intractable insomnia in our country is basically dependent on drugs for treatment, which is definitely a misconception, do not think that this misconception is a small matter, just a small insomnia. The pain of suffering from intractable insomnia is not something that we who do not have insomnia can imagine. Long-term persistent insomnia can also be accompanied by depression and anxiety and various physical discomfort, which makes patients suffer even more. Sometimes the whole family suffers in order to take care of the patient. Long-term persistent insomnia can also trigger or aggravate other physical diseases, such as hypertension; it can also lead to increased difficulty in the treatment of other physical diseases. Long-term unreasonable medication can also lead to dependence and addiction to sleeping pills, leading to the evolution of common insomnia into chronic intractable insomnia, which is probably the most important cause of intractable insomnia, a phenomenon that we hope will attract the attention of doctors, patients and the general public.
