What does increased resistance index of both renal arteries mean?

Increased bilateral renal artery resistance index suggests possible renal disease. Birenal artery resistance index is one of the important parameters of renal blood vessels obtained under ultrasound examination, mainly refers to the systolic flow velocity of renal artery minus diastolic flow velocity, and then divided by the systolic flow velocity to obtain the parameter. Its normal value is usually between 0.5 and 0.7. The renal artery resistance index often increases with age in normal adults. If the resistance index of both renal arteries increases, it indicates a narrowing of the renal arteries. It may be congenital stenosis or acquired stenosis. Congenital stenosis renal artery unilateral stenosis is usually more common; while acquired stenosis is mostly caused by renal artery atherosclerosis, which usually suggests that there is a lesion in the kidneys, such as acute glomerulonephritis, chronic glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome and so on. If patients find that the resistance index of both renal arteries is increased, it is recommended to go to regular hospitals in time, improve the examination to clarify the cause of the disease, and then give targeted treatment or therapy under the guidance of the doctor.
