Do gallbladder polyps over one centimeter have to be operated on?

Surgery is usually required when gallbladder polyps exceed 1 centimeter.
Gallbladder polyps are lesions that originate from the wall of the gallbladder and protrude into the gallbladder cavity, mainly due to abnormal cholesterol metabolism, gallbladder stones or chronic inflammation. They are usually asymptomatic and difficult to characterize as benign or malignant before surgery.
Gallbladder polyps are mostly non-tumor-like polyps, when ultrasound found that the diameter of the gallbladder polyp is less than 1 cm, there are no symptoms, do not need to be treated, can be followed up with regular ultrasound, usually every six months to do ultrasound examination. For polyps significantly enlarged and symptomatic gallbladder polyps, or gallbladder polyps ≥ 1cm in diameter, surgical resection should be considered.
Therefore, patients with gallbladder polyps should be closely observed, and those who have reached the surgical indication should be treated with surgery as soon as possible, which can reduce the incidence of cancer.
