How big a popliteal cyst needs surgery

The size of popliteal cysts is not an absolute indication for surgery, and popliteal cysts that are asymptomatic usually do not require surgical treatment.
Generally, when the popliteal cyst grows to more than 2 cm, it may press on the surrounding tissues and cause local pain or press on the nerves at the back and cause numbness in the lower limbs, or it may cause knee joint movement due to the enlargement of the popliteal cyst. In this case, the cyst needs to be removed.
The methods of cyst removal include traditional incision and excision, and arthroscopic removal of the knee, in which the cyst is found, the cyst fluid is drained from the inside of the cyst, the cyst wall is removed, and the posterior area of the knee joint is bandaged with pressure after the operation to prevent the recurrence of the cyst.
Surgery can be considered for popliteal cysts that are more than 2 centimeters in size and have an impact on work and life.
Surgery for popliteal cysts is recommended to be performed in a regular hospital.
