Calf swelling is a common symptom, which refers to localised tissue swelling in the calf, mainly manifested as thickening of the circumference of the calf and tissue interstitial oedema. The mechanism may be injury to the local tissues of the lower leg, poor reflux in the vascular system of the lower limb, hypoalbuminemia and water and sodium retention.
Some common functional causes such as senile calf swelling, swollen calves in sedentary chair users and uterine compression in pregnancy can lead to this symptom. Lower limb varicose veins, acute cellulitis, chronic heart failure, chronic nephritis and other conditions can also present with symptoms of swollen calves.
