What does Toldts clearance mean?

Toldts hiatus refers to a potential cavity formed by the mesentery of the colon and the tissue of the posterior wall. The Toldts hiatus is a potential lumen formed by the peritoneal structures of the posterior wall of the ascending and descending colon reflexing and forming a potential lumen with the soft tissues of the posterior lateral abdominal wall during embryonic development of the normal human body, which has an important role in the surgical procedure. When laparoscopic surgery is performed, it is possible to operate in the Toldts hiatus, incise along the left lateral peritoneum of the lumen, and fold the left half of the colon to the right, which allows complete exposure of the clean latent lumen, achieves bloodlessness of the operative area, and minimizes tissue damage.
