How long to use biologics for ankylosing spondylitis

Patients with ankylosing spondylitis usually need to take biologics for about 3 to 6 months. Often the biologics are more expensive, so patients don’t have the means to stay on them. Once the disease is stabilized, the dosage can be gradually reduced to get the lowest effective dose of the treatment, and eventually the medication can also be gradually discontinued. Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the mid-axis joints, mostly in adolescents. It is a chronic progressive rheumatic disease that can also involve internal organs and other tissues. Patients can taper off the dosage when applying biologics for one to three months, on the basis of controlling the disease, but try to maintain the six-month treatment period, and follow the doctor’s instructions to regularly taper off the dosage or discontinue the medication.
