With the improvement of laparoscopic equipment and technology, laparoscopic treatment of pancreatic tumor has been gradually applied to clinical practice. Laparoscopic technology has the advantages of better surgical field, less intraoperative bleeding, less trauma, higher success rate of spleen preservation and faster postoperative recovery than traditional open surgery to remove pancreatic tumor. On November 2, 2009, the general surgery department of our hospital successfully performed laparoscopic spleen-preserving pancreatic caudal resection for a patient with a pancreatic tail mass under the guidance of Director Wei Junmin and the cooperation of Chief Physician Chen Jian and Chief Physician He Xiuwen. The technical requirements of spleen-preserving pancreatic caudal resection are high and time-consuming, and due to the complex anatomical relationship between the pancreas and spleen, splenic artery and vein and the high-risk nature of pancreatic surgery, it is still very difficult and has a low chance of success under the conditions of open surgery; while laparoscopic operation to preserve the spleen and perform pancreatic caudal mass resection is even more difficult, requiring not only rich experience in pancreatic surgery, but also skillful operation. This is another breakthrough of our general surgery department after the successful implementation of laparoscopic hepatectomy, which indicates that the level of laparoscopic surgery in our general surgery department has entered the advanced ranks in China.
