Indications for ventilator deactivation

Patients are not able to breathe on their own due to a variety of reasons, when a ventilator is used to maintain normal respiratory function. The following are the indications for deconditioning: 1) The primary lesion has been basically healed and the condition is stable, such as severe infection. 2) There is no malnutrition and the respiratory muscle strength is good enough to counteract the resistance of the respiratory airflow. 3) The respiratory rate is usually less than 30 breaths per minute. 4) The lung volume can reach 1800 mL per minute for women and 2500 mL per minute for men. The patient’s consciousness is very clear and cooperative, with a normal response and a normal cough reflex. 6. The blood oxygen saturation is good, the partial pressure of oxygen in the blood is higher than 60 mmHg, and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide is relatively stable and normal. When these conditions are met, it is an indication for ventilator deconditioning. However, it should be noted that the process of off-loading should not be too early, otherwise it will increase the burden on the respiratory muscles, so the timing of off-loading should be adjusted according to the patient’s own condition.
