Epiphyseal closure is when the epiphyseal plate stops growing and the epiphysis closes during a child’s growth spurt. Typically, epiphyseal closure occurs at different times for different bones. Some epiphyses may close earlier, while others, especially in long bones, may close later. This is because during the process of growth, the epiphyses grow and the epiphyseal plates grow, i.e., at the ends of the limbs, at the ends of each heel bone, the epiphyseal plates grow to cause the limbs to grow taller, and once the epiphyses close, the person will no longer grow taller.
