Thymoma is a common form of mediastinal tumor that often requires surgical removal. Traditional treatment requires a median splitting of the sternum to remove the tumor, which is more invasive. Due to advances in minimally invasive techniques, most patients with thymoma can be completely removed with only minimally invasive surgery. Currently, simple thymomas less than 5 cm in diameter can be operated unilaterally thoracoscopically, while for some thymomas larger than 5 cm in diameter, median open-heart surgery is often required. We have successfully used bilateral thoracoscopic thymoma resection in the past 3 years to treat some patients with thymoma larger than 5 cm in diameter, thus avoiding a median sternotomy, with smaller postoperative incision scar, faster recovery, and higher patient acceptance. Our experience with this technique was summarized in a paper and published in The Thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, a European journal specializing in thoracic surgery.
