How to treat strabismus

The treatment of strabismus is divided into non-surgical treatment and surgical treatment. Strabismus is a disease of the extraocular muscles in which both eyes cannot look at the target at the same time, and can be divided into two categories: common strabismus and paralytic strabismus. Common strabismus is characterized by no eye movement disorder and the same degree of strabismus in the first eye position (looking straight ahead) and the second eye position (looking up, looking down, looking left, looking right); paralytic strabismus, on the other hand, has limited eye movement and diplopia, which can be congenital or caused by trauma or systemic diseases. According to the direction of the abnormal eye position, it is roughly divided into: horizontal strabismus (internal strabismus, external strabismus) and vertical strabismus. Treatment methods are as follows: 1. Non-surgical treatment: If there is amblyopia caused by strabismus, the first step is to treat the amblyopia and then correct the skewed eye position. The treatment methods for strabismus include: prescription glasses, masking method, and ortho-optic training. Covering method is the main method to treat amblyopia caused by strabismus. Mild strabismus can be corrected with prismatic lenses. Orthoptic training can be used as a supplement before and after surgery. The younger the age of strabismus treatment, the better the effect. 2. Surgical treatment: Ocular muscle surgery involves relaxing (weakening) or shortening (strengthening) one or more of the extraocular muscles in one or both eyes. Strabismus surgery is not only to improve the appearance, but more importantly, to establish the visual function of both eyes. Postoperative visual function training is also performed to enhance and maintain stable stereopsis. Therefore, the treatment of strabismus depends on the patient’s actual condition.
