Glossopharyngeal neuralgia has manifested as electric shock, knife-like pain symptoms, which is unbearable for ordinary people and can be said to be painful. But Chen, who has been ill for more than three years, is now smiling even in her dreams. She boasts to everyone: “Xi’an Central Hospital neurosurgery technology is high, a small lock hole surgery, but cured my years of linguopharyngeal neuralgia!” Chen had suffered from linguopharyngeal neuralgia for more than 3 years, manifesting as occasional pain in the right side of the throat when eating, and then the number of episodes gradually increased, in the form of pins and needles, which could be triggered by yawning, opening the mouth, turning the head, coughing and other actions. Because of the pain, the patient almost went into shock. He had been treated at Xijing Hospital and the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University, where he underwent laryngoscopy and other examinations, and was treated for “inflammation of the throat” and “trigeminal neuralgia”, but his condition did not improve. As her condition worsened, the patient repeatedly had thoughts of dying. In March this year, she came to our neurosurgery department to see Dr. Be Xiaohua, the deputy chief physician. After detailed medical history and relevant examination, Dr. Bu finally found the real culprit: a linguopharyngeal nerve in Chen’s cranium was compressed by a large blood vessel, and as long as the nerve was stimulated, severe pain would appear, namely linguopharyngeal neuralgia. After the hospital admission, Dr. Chang Shulin, Dr. Zhang Shirong, Dr. Bie Xiaohua and other general physicians attached great importance to her. After the hospital discussion and elaborate preparation, they decided to perform a new technical solution for the treatment of linguopharyngeal neuralgia, “microvascular decompression”. In the operating room, after only 2 hours of surgery, Chen’s throat was really pain-free! Dr. Xiaohua introduced that in the past, it was difficult to find a completely effective cure for linguopharyngeal neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia and facial muscle spasm, and once the patients developed, the pain was unbearable and seriously affected their lives, especially linguopharyngeal neuralgia, which is very rare and has a much lower incidence than trigeminal neuralgia and facial muscle spasm, and is easily misdiagnosed. Microvascular decompression surgery is the only effective method to treat the etiology of this type of disease. Because of the small incision with a small bone window, it is imaginatively called “lock-hole surgery” and basically leaves no scar after cosmetic suture. Since microvascular decompression has the advantages of being radical, non-destructive, and with few side effects, it is currently the safest and most effective method internationally recognized for the treatment of glossopharyngeal neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, and facial muscle spasm.
