The recurrence rate after lumbar disc herniation surgery is not high. If the lumbar disc herniation is done as open surgery, not only will the herniated lumbar disc be removed during the surgery, but the lumbar disc in the intervertebral space will also be removed together. So there is no lumbar disc in the gap, which naturally does not lead to recurrence of lumbar disc herniation. If minimally invasive laminectomy is performed, only part of the protruding lumbar disc is removed during the surgery, and most of the lumbar discs are still located within the intervertebral space, which may lead to postoperative recurrence of lumbar disc herniation. However, the overall recurrence rate is not high, at 20% or less.
