Why do I still have pain when my shingles are healed?

Often, some middle-aged and elderly patients have pain even after the herpes zoster rash has completely subsided, and they may not be able to sleep at night, even though the local skin is intact but they are afraid to touch it. Why is this? We know that herpes zoster is caused by the activation of the virus latent in the body, and the essence of the pain is the inflammation or even necrosis of the affected ganglion. Especially in elderly people, as they age, the various functions of the body are decreasing, and it is more difficult to repair damaged nerve tissue, so posterior neuralgia is likely to occur. Especially in those who have poor health or are not treated in time, such pain lasts for several months or even longer. Therefore, in order to prevent the occurrence of post-herpetic neuralgia, herpes zoster must be treated in a timely and regular manner.
