Can presbyopia be treated surgically?

Presbyopia can be treated surgically. The most common type of surgery is laser surgery, which is similar to laser surgery for myopia. The main purpose is to use laser to sculpt the corneal stroma, adjust the refractive error, and utilize parallax to improve presbyopia. The goal of the surgery is to correct the dominant eye to zero degrees for distance vision, while the non-dominant eye retains up to 150 degrees for near vision. The adjusted parallax is then processed by the brain to overlap the two near and far views into a new three-dimensional space. However, many patients are still unable to adapt to the sensation of seeing near objects in one eye and far objects in the other after the surgery, or because of the large parallax between the two eyes, which leads to frequent headaches, and in the end, they still put on their presbyopia glasses. Therefore, presbyopia surgery should be performed with caution, and there are certain risks and after-effects.
