The scientific debate on TCM is not important, effective treatment is the hard truth

It is not important to argue about the science of TCM, but to treat the disease effectively is the hard truth. This is a question that has been debated in academic circles for nearly a century. The main reason for this debate is that people hold different views on the understanding of science. I personally believe that whether Chinese medicine is scientific or not? First of all, we must understand the concept of science, characteristics and development trends, followed by the importance of the dangers of scientism, and finally stressed that: human society is in the constant pursuit of truth in the development and progress, science is a system of knowledge and methods and technical means, from the philosophical level, practice is the only criterion for testing the truth, so the effectiveness of Chinese medicine is proven in practice, this is the truth, but also science. I. What is science (a) the concept of science “science” a word derived from the medieval Latin Scientia, the original meaning is “learning”, “knowledge”. In the early 12th century, the cosmologist William first clearly put forward “science is knowledge”. Since then, it is widely believed that science is a kind of knowledge system. In the Dictionary published in 1979, it is written that science is “a system of knowledge about nature, society and thinking”. Encyclopedia of Natural Dialectics: “a system of knowledge reflecting the essential connections of the objective world (nature and society and thinking) and its laws of motion, the social establishment that organizes scientific activity.” Science in a broad sense: refers to natural sciences, humanities and social sciences and the science of thinking. Science in a narrow sense refers exclusively to natural sciences. Bernard, the founder of science, noted: “Science has indeed undergone such important changes in the whole history of mankind that it is impossible to give a proper definition. Science in its full sense contains at least five layers of meaning: first, science is an establishment; second, science is a method; third, science is a cumulative tradition of knowledge; fourth, science is a major factor in maintaining and developing production; fifth, science is an important source of ideas and spiritual factors, one of the most powerful forces that constitute our beliefs.” (b) The basic characteristics of science: 1. theoretical system: logical and systematic 2. objectivity 3. repeatability and verifiability (c) Simple and complex science What can be solved by reductionist methods is simple, otherwise it is complex; the study of simple things is simple science, and the study of complex things is complex science. A common point between Chinese medicine and complexity science is the adherence to holism, and the common point between Western medicine and simplicity science is the adherence to reductionism. Currently, the transformation and evolution of scientific systems has shown that the new form of science represented by complexity science has been formed, i.e., complexity science cannot be measured by reductionism as a standard. The rise of complexity science has provided new coordinates for examining TCM, and finally people have begun to see the scientific nature of TCM beyond its time. II. Is Chinese medicine scientific? But if you take the emerging complexity science as the standard, Chinese medicine is in many ways more scientific than Western medicine. First, there are many profound convergences in academic thought between Chinese medicine and complexity science. The measure of whether TCM is scientific, which aspects are scientific and which aspects are not, should be complexity science, not reductionist science. Most of the explanations of conditions, causes and pathologies in TCM can be found in complexity science, which is more in line with the frontier progress of modern science. Second, the fact that we are emphasizing the scientific nature of TCM does not mean that we are dismissing the fact that it is still inadequate and backward. This is a problem that cannot be ignored. But to solve these problems, we cannot base on reductionist science. The experience of scientificization and modernization of TCM has fully illustrated this point. In terms of the concept and basic characteristics of science, TCM has all the characteristics of science. 1. TCM has an independent and complete theoretical system, a holistic biopsychosocial medical model, and unique and effective methods and techniques for diagnosis, treatment, disease prevention, and health care. 2. The theory of TCM has scientific objectivity. The objectivity of TCM theory lies in its practicality. Long-term clinical practice and modern scientific research prove that the achievements of Chinese medicine are inseparable from the idea of respecting objective facts in Chinese medicine. 3. Repeatability and testability of theories and methods of TCM. The theories and methods of TCM are preserved through the accumulation of history and practical experience. This confirms its repeatability and validity on the one hand, and shows that the theories and methods of TCM can be accepted and inherited by the world on the other. There are countless examples to prove its advantages. 4. Chinese medicine has the characteristics of a scientific community. TCM is an effective medical method that has been widely recognized through thousands of years of practice, and has been recognized and inherited and carried forward by successive generations of scholars and practitioners. This group recognition and the recognition of our Constitution strongly indicate that TCM has a community character. People want to use the standards of simple science to measure other cultural achievements of human beings such as literature, history, philosophy, politics, economics, and law, and want these humanities to have the same rigor, accuracy, and predictability of science. This positivist idea of simple science spread to all fields and gave rise to scientism, or scientism alone. Scientism believed that all the problems that mankind faced and would face would be solved by the development of science and its technology. The spread of this scientism led to two consequences: first, the destruction of science and the scientific spirit; second, the generalization of science and the loss of a normal environment for the growth of non-scientific cultures such as religion and art, while providing a natural soil for the proliferation of pseudoscience. Today some units to SCI papers to assess the performance of Chinese medicine is this idea is at fault. Fourth, science is not the only criterion for testing the truth Any science is a product of a certain historical era, are not the ultimate truth. Vital science is the development of. The development and progress of human society is achieved through a variety of practical activities, including natural sciences, humanities and social sciences and thinking science in the pursuit of truth. Marx, in his “Outline on Feuerbach,” clearly explained “practice” for the first time. He believed that “practice” is the real, dynamic human perceptual activity. It is clear that scientific practice is not limited to the laboratory. Marx also put forward the scientific concept of “practice is the only criterion for testing the truth”, which correctly expounded the relationship between science, practice and truth, and is of guiding significance for our correct understanding of the scientific aspects of Chinese medicine. In the long history of Chinese medicine, Chinese medicine has developed its own unique theory, which is obviously different from Western medicine. The theory of TCM is so vast and profound that it is far beyond the understanding of simple science. Therefore, people with simple scientistic ideas are actually unable to accept the thinking of Chinese medicine and to understand it properly. Therefore, we advise against measuring Chinese medicine with reductionist ideas, especially the so-called scientologists who have read some books on Chinese medicine and have no clinical practice and specialize in fault-finding. Six, whether Chinese medicine is scientific debate is not important, effective treatment is the hard truth Chinese medicine science is not scientific? Why should Chinese medicine be scientific? These arguments seem never-ending. As a clinician, you can stop arguing and concentrate on your medical skills, and it is the hard truth that you can cure the disease. The fact is that TCM does not necessarily need scientific proof to cure a disease, the facts speak louder than words. What is the mechanism of curing a disease? Can it be confirmed? If we leave it to scientific research, we will know that to study Chinese medicine with the idea of reductive confirmation is often to seek fish from a log. The real healer can reflect the technical advantages of healing health care is the hard truth, of course, to be able to have an understanding of some basic issues of the development of Chinese medicine science is also necessary.
