Dry heel cracking is a skin condition, but it can also be associated with systemic diseases, such as reduced sweating due to autonomic neuropathy, nerve abnormalities in the distal lower limbs and peripheral vascular disease, all of which can cause dry skin and foot ulcers and diabetic foot.
Patients who develop dry and cracked heels may first visit a dermatologist, but may also need to visit an endocrinologist or rheumatologist.
