Knee joint effusion belongs to the category of Crane’s Knee Wind in traditional Chinese medicine, and the Chinese herbal prescriptions that can be used include Da Fang Feng Tang, Duo Wu Zhi Sheng Tang, and so on. 1. Da Fang Feng Tang, function is to dispel wind and smooth qi, activate blood circulation, strengthen muscles and bones. It is used for treating dysentery wind, post-dysentery foot pain and paralysis, unable to walk; and crane’s knee wind, both knees are swollen and painful, thighs and shins are withered and waxed, but the skin and bones are still there, and there is contracture and curling up, unable to flex and extend. 2. Duhu Sheng Tang has the efficacy of dispelling wind-dampness, relieving paralytic pain, benefiting the liver and kidney, and tonifying qi and blood. It is used for treating prolonged paralysis, deficiency of liver and kidney, and insufficiency of qi and blood. Symptoms include pain in waist and knees, impotence, limb flexion and extension, or numbness, fear of cold and love of warmth, palpitation (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), shortness of breath, pale tongue, white fur, and weak pulse. It is contraindicated in cases of paralysis due to dampness-heat syndrome. If medication is needed, it should be diagnosed by a doctor and the treatment should be standardized according to the doctor’s prescription.
