Can quaternary ammonium salts kill coronaviruses?

There are many types of quaternary ammonium salts. Single-chain quaternary ammonium salts do not kill coronaviruses, while double-chain quaternary ammonium salts and complex quaternary ammonium salts made from a mixture of single-chain and double-chain quaternary ammonium salts can kill coronaviruses. Single-chain quaternary ammonium salts do not kill coronaviruses. Benzalkonium chloride is a single-chain quaternary ammonium salt, which is a low-level disinfectant usually added to personal care products such as shampoos and body washes, and does not kill coronaviruses. Double-chain quaternary ammonium salts, including Didecyldimethylammonium Chloride and Didecyldimethylammonium Bromide, are medium-level disinfectants that can kill coronaviruses. Double-chained quaternary ammonium salts have a broader-spectrum disinfectant effect than single-chained quaternary ammonium salts because they have a double-chained structure and are more fat-soluble. Disinfectants such as ether, 75% ethanol, chlorinated disinfectants, and peracetic acid can also be used to kill coronaviruses.
