Urinary retention, known as retention of urine in Chinese medicine (urine dribbling or not being able to urinate), can be treated by taking medications to identify the symptoms. For example, for bladder damp-heat syndrome, one can take Bazheng San; for lung heat congestion syndrome, one can take Qinglong Drink with additions or subtractions; and for liver depression and qi stagnation syndrome, one can take Shenxiang San with additions or subtractions. 1. Damp-heat bladder syndrome: mainly manifested as inability to pass urine or small amount of dark color, burning pain when urinating, bitter mouth mucus, constipation, red tongue, yellowish greasy moss, number of pulses and so on. You can take Bazheng San plus reduction. 2. Lung heat congestion: mainly manifested as inability to pass urine, dry throat, thirst and like to drink water, red tongue, thin yellow moss, number of pulse. It can be treated with the addition or subtraction of Lung Cleansing Drink. 3. Liver depression and stagnation of qi (poor qi and blood transportation of the liver, emotional depression): mainly manifested as inability to pass urine, depression or irritability, red tongue, thin yellow moss, stringy pulse. You can take Shenxiang San plus subtractions. 4. Turbid and stagnant obstruction syndrome: the main manifestations are inability to pass urine or urine like a thin line, abdominal distension and pain, purple and dark tongue or petechiae, astringent pulse. You can take Dai Dai Dang Wan with additional reduction. 5. Spleen qi deficiency syndrome: mainly manifested as abdominal distension, want to urinate but difficult to discharge, and fatigue, pale tongue, thin moss, thin pulse, etc.. It can be treated with tonifying the middle and benefiting the qi, plus or minus. 6. Kidney yang deficiency (lack of yang energy in the kidneys): the main manifestations are inability to pass urine, weakness in urination, pale face, weakness of waist and knees (the feeling of weakness in waist and knees), weak, pale and fat tongue, thin and white moss, and thin or weak pulse. You may take Jisheng Kidney Qi Pill with additional reduction. If suffering from urinary retention, one should consult the clinician and follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment.
