Is portal hypertension indicative of advanced cirrhosis?

Portal hypertension does not indicate advanced cirrhosis. Persistently elevated portal pressure (HVPG ≥ 6 mmHg) is considered portal hypertension. Portal pressure depends on portal blood flow and portal resistance. Portal hypertension can occur in all stages of cirrhosis. The clinical manifestations of advanced cirrhosis are loss of appetite, fatigue, jaundice, and abdominal pain with portal hypertension. Portal hypertension is one of the clinical manifestations of cirrhosis. It can occur in all stages of cirrhosis and cannot suggest advanced cirrhosis. However, prolonged high portal hypertension, without treatment, can progress to the advanced stage of cirrhosis. If portal hypertension occurs, you should go to the hospital in time and follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment.
